Author's Note: Cookie time! A bit crack-ish, but I hope it'll be an enjoyable read anyway. :) I'll say the "playing house" theme took quite an unexpected turn here. I really hadn't intended to torture Mo this much (and in this manner). ^^;
A Necessary Household
by Téa P.
Rie always knew whenever Nishimura Tomo was coming over, and she'd know it long before anyone told her. After all, one look at her younger sister on such days would be more than enough to tip anyone off... which was why she was taken completely by surprise that afternoon, when her mother stopped her in the hallway and said the Nishimuras should be arriving shortly.
What? No rushing in and out of the kitchen for food that Nao insists must be real when playing house? No whirlwind of preparations and the setting up of chairs, tables, teacups, and whatever else she deems necessary for the day?
Her confusion must've been rather apparent, but her mother offered no explanation aside from a smile that was really a borderline-smirk. This, of course, only served to fuel her curiosity, and she veered off in search of her sister.
When Rie finally found her, the girl was wading in the closet, practically half-drowning in mountains of clothes and accessories. Frowning at the odd sight she was presented with, Rie ventured into the closet, carefully placing her feet in the few patches here and there that were clothes-free.
"Nao, what on earth are you doing?" Rie looked around incredulously and added, "You've got clothes everywhere. Mom's going to kill you when she sees this."
"I'm getting ready for... ohh, where is it?!" Nao's voice came out muffled and frazzled, her head already diving back inside the deep drawer.
Rie was just about to ask what she thought she was getting ready to do with all those clothes when Nao's hand shot up in the air triumphantly.
"Aha! Here it is!"
The older girl squinted at the white, shiny thing fisted inside Nao's little fingers and asked, "Pearls? That necklace is the reason why you've emptied your closet onto the floor?"
Nao looked up at her with something of a cross between a frown and a disapproving pout. "Of course not," she replied in an all-knowing tone. "They're for the wedding."
Huh?
. . . . .
Less than an hour later, Nao was running down a corridor in the west wing of the house, dragging along one flustered Nishimura Tomo. Normally, Rie would leave the pair well alone since she had long outgrown the games they usually played. Today, however, she wasn't about to miss this. Besides, she had already agreed. And this was going to be fun.
"Nao," Tomo asked in confusion, after walking into the playroom and noting that none of their usual plates and cups were set up on the table. "Aren't we going to play house today?"
"We are," Nao replied as she turned to look at him earnestly. "But we've been doing it all wrong, Mo!"
"What do you mean?" Tomo looked like he was thinking hard, before he finally shook his head. "We even use real food too."
"No, you dummy! It has to be more real," Nao emphasized as she pulled her cousin towards the bathroom. Then shoving Tomo through the door, she wisely explained, "We have to be married to play house. It's only proper."
Before Tomo could even register what Nao had said, she had already shut the door in his face and expertly locked it from the outside. The pounding of the door started almost immediately.
"Nao," Tomo whined, "let me out!"
By now, Nao was already taking off her clothes and moving towards the outfit she had prepared for just this day. Standing in only her underwear and with fisted hands propped on her waist, she yelled back at her cousin, "Of course, I can't do that! I'm changing, and you should hurry up and do the same!"
There was complete silence for a few minutes. From behind the bathroom door, Tomo turned around and stared in horror at the lacy outfit laid on the counter. It came complete with shoes and... other accessories. If Nao thought he was going to wear that, she was crazier than he thought. Rushing back towards the door, he pounded on it with renewed fervor.
"Nao!" Tomo gave a panicky shout, "I'm not going to wear that! Let me out!"
Pulling her head out of the neckline of her white top, Nao scowled and replied crossly, "I spent all day picking out the perfect outfit for you, and I won't let you out until you change into everything that's on the counter!"
"But Nao," he whined again, though he had a feeling it was nothing but a futile attempt. He knew well, how stubborn his cousin could be. Turning to stare at the outfit, he whimpered a little and wondered how long he could avoid going near it.
At the end of it all, it was nearing four hours by the time Tomo, face bright red and fully dressed, emerged from the bathroom to a very smug looking Nao.
. . . . .
"Well, Nao," Rie said, barely putting forth any effort to suppress the snigger. Then, with a loud snort, she announced, "You may now kiss your bride."
For years to come, Rie would always remember how Tomo looked in a white, princess dress, a tiara, a pearl necklace, dainty heels, and pink lipstick. But what really stood out in her memory of this day was the expression on his face as Nao proceeded to hand him a doll and said, "You have to breast feed, Mo!"
